Rwanda Steel Imports to Be Halved by New Domestic Steel Plant
2026-09-16  Ahramonline
Rwanda steel imports face a structural reversal as the country's first fully integrated steel plant opens in Musanze, with officials projecting annual foreign steel spending to fall by $100 million.

A1 Iron and Steel Rwanda Ltd began operations at its Musanze Industrial Park facility in April 2026. Prime Minister Justin Nsengiyumba formally inaugurated the plant on 11 September 2026. The facility marks a decisive step in Rwanda’s drive to build domestic industrial capacity.

The plant is designed to process up to 250,000 tonnes of steel per year. Output includes iron bars, nails, barbed wire, pipes and other construction inputs. That product range targets Rwanda’s fast-growing construction sector directly.

Rwanda currently spends around $200 million a year on steel imports, according to officials cited by the New Times. The new facility could cut that bill by roughly half. Keeping $100 million of value inside the economy each year is a meaningful gain for Rwanda's trade balance.

The plant is backed by Indian investors, per reporting by Xinhua and the New Times. It was developed to add value to local resources and strengthen Rwanda's manufacturing base. Officials say it supports the country’s broader industrialisation agenda.

On employment, the project is expected to create around 1,000 direct jobs and 2,500 indirect roles. In a market where construction activity keeps rising, that labour demand is well-timed.
