The U.S. Department of Commerce has ordered 72.94 % countervailing duty (CVD) against imports of
steel concrete reinforcing bar from Algeria. The new tariffs are enforced as of July 6, 2026, alongside the triple-digit antidumping duties issued earlier this year.
The new CVD decision, published in the U.S. Federal Register, comes after the investigations initiated by the American trade authorities which determined that Algerian steel sold in the United States was unfairly subsidized and priced at less than fair value, causing material injury to the domestic U.S. steel industry.
The new duties imposed on Algerian Rebar exports dealt a very hard blow to the oil-dependent economy of the Algerian regime already battered by the deepening social, economic and political crises with soaring military expenditure.
Last July, President Donald Trump slapped Algeria with 30 % tariffs hike and warned the ruling junta that any reprisals would draw tougher counter-measures.
In a letter sent to President Abdelmajid Tebboune, Mr. Trump notified him of enforcement of the new higher tariffs which started on August 2025 targeting all Algerian products sent into the United States, separate from all Sectoral Tariffs.
The new additional U.S. CVD imposed on Algerian steel combined with other diplomatic measures will increase the pressure on the Algerian rulers, supporter of anti-American regimes posing threat to U.S. national interests in North Africa, Sahel and beyond.
