USIBRAS Ghana Limited, a Brazilian Cashew Processing Company handed over a cashew processing equipment to the Association of Cashew Processors Ghana (ACPG).

Mr Smith said the ACPG represent the value addition segment in the cashew value chain where there is greater potential for job creation and income generation. He said the association has the core aim of providing cashew processors of nuts, shells and aples, and has the possibility to advocate for their business interests with one united voice.

“ACPG wishes to change the status of the cashew processing industry in Ghana by increasing processing volumes of locally sourced raw cashew nuts from 7,000 to 50,000 metric tons and by this means growing the utilization of installed processing capacities from less than 10 to 75 per cent until 2023”.The President of the ACPG said local processors, will in this regard, create more than 10,000 direct and indirect jobs in the cashew sector transform the country's economy.

He thanked USIBRAS and the ACA for the support to the cashew processing industry in Ghana, as this is one of its key objectives as an industry Alliance.Mr Patricio Lima Assis, Director of USIBRAS, said the donation became necessary because our outfit was the only company now processing cashew.

This, he said, does not encourage competition and promote a stronger voice for cashew processors to push forward their agenda for the growth of the industry in Ghana.  Mr Assis said the cashew industry in Ghana was strong and that there is the need to develop the industry to become more lucrative.

He said the cost of each machine was about $6,000 with a processing capacity of 150kg per hour and this will help the beneficiaries increase production with less labour.

Madam Verena Wiesner, Head of Co-operation at the German Embassy, said cashew is an essential commodity for the development of the Ghanaian economy and the recent announcement by the Government of Ghana towards its development attest to this fact. There were also representative from the Embassies of Brazil and Switzerland and the ACA.

USIBRAS Ghana Limited is the biggest cashew processing company in West Africa, with an installed processing capacity of 30,000 metric tons per year for raw cashew nut processing and with potential employment opportunities for about 2000 people.
