Due to the growing demand from Chinese consumers, Ethiopian sesame producers and exporters are interested in increasing their share of sales in the Chinese sesame market.
Haile Berhe, President of the Ethiopian Pulses, Oilseeds and Spices Processors-Exporters Association (EPOSPEA), said in an interview that the current export volume to China accounts for nearly 70% of the total exports of products from East African countries to the global market.
"China's sesame market has become a major exporter for Ethiopian producers and exporters, as Chinese buyers' demand for sesame produced in Ethiopia is also increasing significantly.”
Sesame and coffee are considered to be one of Ethiopia's largest export commodities and the economic backbone of Ethiopia.
The Ethiopian Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources recently announced that sesame production during the current Ethiopian 2018-2019 fiscal year that started on July 9 to hit 350,000 tonnes.
The ministry further estimated the east African country's revenue from the export of sesame to reach some 500 million U.S. dollars during the current fiscal year.
According to relevant reports, nearly 55% of the world's sesame is produced in Africa. Sudan, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Burkina Faso, Mali and Nigeria are the major producers and exporters of African sesame.
