The World Bank has approved a $440 million worth development fund to enhance the Egyptian railway system, International Cooperation Minister Rania el Mashat said Saturday.
Another $3.5 million has also been secured for the Environment Ministry under a grant deal between the Japanese embassy in Cairo and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) to reduce plastic pollution Mashat added.
The former project aims to modernize railway signalling and and renew railway tracks along Cairo-Beni Suef rail line.
It also involves completing the restructuring of the national railway service along Cairo-Alex and Beni Suef-Nag Hammadi rail line, covering about 763 kilometres.
The project also seeks to enhance passenger and staff safety, by introducing a modern safety management system (SMS), and improve the quality of service.
Meanwhile, the second deal is expected to support the Environment Ministry's efforts to a circular economy by embarking on a project aimed at reducing dependence on single-use plastics and material loss and encourage recycling in cooperation with the private sector and SMEs.
The deals were signed during events organized last week by the International Cooperation Ministry as part of its efforts to contribute to the execution of the national agenda for development.
