The town of Bafoussam is set to become the first Smart City in Cameroon, following the signing of a convention with the Cameroon Telecommunications, CAMTEL.
The convention was signed today between the General Manager of CAMTEL, Judithe Yah Sunday and the City Mayor of Bafoussam, Roger Tafam.
Under this convention, Bafoussam is set to become an innovative city, which uses ICT to improve the quality of livelihood of its inhabitants, the efficiency of urban management and urban services as well as the significant improvement of competitiveness in the economic, social, environmental and cultural fields.
Signing the convention on Thursday, April 22 in Bafoussam, the General Manager of CAMTEL, Judith Yah Sunday said the project falls in line with the objectives of the Sustainable Development Goals which Cameroon is strongly attached to. She added that the Smart City project falls in line within the National Strategic Development programme aimed at promoting the digital economy as oulined by the Head of State, Paul Biya.
“We consider this a win-win partnership for both the Bafoussam City Council and CAMTEL.For this reason, I want to assure you that CAMTEL shall put at your disposal its best and latest technical skills and expertise to ensure a resounding success of this partnership. Its success is our pride. Together, we will build a connected city, a digital city, a Smart City for the well-being of the people of your friendly city.
On his part, the City Mayor of Bafoussam, Roger Tafam said the project goes just beyond providing the City Council with equipment and tools to empower its operations and, in turn, improve its performance but will also offer the population a living environment conducive to their development.
Given that Bafoussam is set to host one of the groups for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations, he called on the population to join forces together in order to make this project a success as he hoped to see the city become the next Silicon Valley in the Central African sub region through the setting up of an incubator for digital projects and businesses.
