Morocco receives revenues between $40 and $70 million annually from strawberry exports to the international market.
New data from East Fruit has reported that the country’s exports of fresh strawberries have “set a historical record,” stressing with Morocco continuing to diversify its supplies.
“Fresh strawberries in Morocco, although their export volume is lower than that of frozen strawberries or of fresh raspberries and blueberries, are still one of the key commodities of the country's fruit and vegetable exports,” the data shows, stressing that the strawberry products are part of the top 10 most exported goods from Morocco.
The country’s exports of fresh strawberries to the international market are estimated at 22,400 tonnes of fresh strawberries in 2022.
The number represents an increase of 17% compared to a year earlier.
In addition to strawberries, Morocco also increased blueberry exports by 28% since 2017, while the country’s strawberry exports have been increasing by 3% over the years during the same period.
Spain is one of the international markets that received over three-quarters of Morocco's strawberries since 2017.
Spain’s share, however, dropped to more than 20% in five years later, while Morocco’s strawberry supplies to the Middle East increased from 0.5 to 8% over the years.
Counties in the Middle East, including the UAE and Qatar were key buyers of Moroccan goods.
The UK is also one of the major customers of Morocco’s strawberry exports as the country imported “almost half of the Moroccan strawberry exports” in 2022.
