Morocco and China have pledged to improve agriculture cooperation through a new memorandum of understanding (MoU).

China's Minister of Agriculture Tang Renjian signed the agreement on Tuesday along with his Moroccan counterpart Mohamed Sadiki.

The agreement aims to help the two countries improve and boost cooperation in different fields in the agriculture sector, including distant water fishing and organic agriculture.

During his meeting with Morocco’s agriculture minister, Tang Renjian expressed his country’ willingness to deepen cooperation with Morocco on different other sectors, including dry land water-saving agriculture, as well as animal disease prevention and control, Xinhua reported on Tuesday.

Morocco's agriculture minister echoed Tang’s sentiments, stressing the Moroccan government’s determination to take the agreement signed on Tuesday as an “opportunity to raise the level of hina-Morocco” agriculture partnership.

Morocco and China cooperate in different sectors, including trade.

In 2022, the two countries celebrated the 64th anniversary of long-running diplomatic ties that have long been based on exchanges of state and official visits as well as trade cooperation.

According to data from the Observatory of Economic Complexity, China exported $6.43 billion to Morocco, with the main products exported to the North African country including vaccines, broadcasting equipment, and tea.

“During the last 26 years the exports of China to Morocco have increased at an annualized rate of 15.3%, from $159 M in 1995 to $6.43B in 2021,” the Observatory detailed.  Morocco exported $523 million to China during the same period, it added, stressing that Moroccan exports included copper products as well as Zinc Ore..

This week’s MoU to deepen Chinese-Moroccan agricultural cooperation came as Morocco’s government continued to express eagerness to benefit from Chinese expertise in the fields of agriculture and fisheries.

According to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, China ranks first in the world in terms of production of a wide range of food items, including vegetables, meat, poultry, and fishery products.
