Morocco is the 22nd largest importer of nuts in the world, new statistics has shown. According to the agriculture-focused news website East Fruit, Morocco imported over 20,000 tonnes of nuts in the first four months in 2023.
“As these months are important for imports of several nut categories, the total nut imports are expected to increase again in 2023,” the report said.
Stressing the importance of Morocco as a producer of nuts, East Fruit recalled that this production is not “enough” to satisfy national demand.
Morocco spent over $186 million on nut imports last year. The US is the largest supplier of nut exporters to Morocco, including China and Chile.
Nuts are important in Morocco, being used on many occasions – including weddings and other celebrations.
This period is also important for nut consumption. Morocco is celebrating Ashura soon, marking the tenth day of Muharram – the first month in the Islamic calendar.
Ahead of Ashura, Moroccans shop for nuts and dried fruits called “fakia” in markets across Morocco, and families serve them with milk, a seasoned coffee, or a cup of mint tea.
