Morocco’s port authority is going green. It seeks to set up five photovoltaic solar plants in the ports of Casablanca, Agadir, Jorf lasfar, Laayoune, and Boujdour.

The solar plants would power the ports to reduce the carbon footprint, as part of a larger national plan that would increase the share of renewables in the electricity mix to 52% by 2030.

The authority also plans a small desalination plant in Lamhiriz port that is also designed to be powered by solar energy.

Morocco is planning to boost its renewable energy capacity to 11GW by adding 6.5GW over the next four years.

The country has a total capacity of 11GW and plans to almost double that to 20GW as it also invests in gas and green hydrogen.
