The Safi seawater desalination plant, managed by the OCP Group, is set to play a crucial role in alleviating Safi's water crisis, a situation worsened by prolonged droughts impacting the Oum Er Rbia basin.

Inaugurated in 2022 through OCP Green Water, a subsidiary of OCP, and in collaboration with the Ministry of the Interior, the plant has been instrumental in addressing regional water shortages.
It boasts an annual production capacity of 40 million cubic meters, with 15 million cubic meters allocated specifically for Safi. As of August 2023, the plant has gradually started supplying water to the city, with plans to meet full demand by February 2024.

By 2026, the facility aims to increase its output to 30 million cubic meters annually for Safi and an additional 20 million cubic meters for industrial use in the broader Marrakech-Safi region.
This expansion reflects Morocco's commitment to enhancing regional water security and supporting local industrial activities.

The project is aligned with King Mohammed VI's directive to utilize non-traditional water sources to address climate change and water scarcity challenges. It represents a significant advancement in the integrated management of water resources.

The plant is equipped with two main units: one for industrial water production and another for potable water. The desalination process includes pre-treatment, filtration, and reverse osmosis, ensuring that the water meets international quality standards.

The total cost of the project is estimated at 2.8 billion dirhams. According to Otmane Abousselham, Head of Operations at OCP Green Water, the project was completed in under a year, thanks to OCP Group's expertise and collaboration with Moroccan companies.

Abousselham stressed the importance of responsible water consumption and urged all stakeholders to use water judiciously.
Supported by the National Drinking Water Supply and Irrigation Program (PNAEPI), this desalination plant is part of Morocco's broader strategy to address water challenges.
