Algeria to Stop Importing Cement the Next Year

Adrar — The year 2017 will mark the end of cement import in Algeria, said Sunday Minister of Industry and Mining Abdessalem Bouchouareb during a working visit to Adrar (1543-km south of Algiers).

"The year 2017 will mark the end of cement import in Algeria, with the commissioning of all cement plants across the country, whose total annual production capacity is expected to reach 6 million tonnes," said Bouchouareb during his inspection visit to the cement plant of the commune of Timegtane, in the sub-prefecture of Aoulef (260km east of Adrar).

The minister underlined that those "industrial projects will allow the country to achieve self-sufficiency in cement, and begin to export it."

On the project site, the minister listened to a brief presentation on the cement plant, which is the fruit of an Algerian-Chinese partnership.

This ambitious project, which has reached nearly 90% completion, is due to be commissioned by the end of the year.

Bouchouareb will continue his working visit to the southern province by inspecting other projects coming under his ministry.
