Cameroon’s cotton yield will reach 260,000 tonnes for the 2017/2018 season, if Tuesday’s revelations by the management of the Cotton Development Company (SODECOTON) are anything to go by. Based on these estimates, production would be up by 20,000 tonnes, compared to the 2016/2017 season when the annual output was about 240,000 tonnes.
Despite activities by Boko Haram insurgents in Cameroon’s Far North, SODECOTON, which covers the three northern regions of Adamaoua, the Far North and North, is optimistic about cotton prospects for the next season.
It argues that prospects would be bright give the reorganization of the sector to reduce contraband exports to neighbouring Nigeria, a situation which should allow nearly 25,000 producers to enjoy brisk business.
As a result, expected turnovers are being projected at CFA140 billion, an increase of CFA20 billion, compared to that of last year when it was CFA120 billion.
SODECOTON is expected to generate an estimated CFA140 billion in turnovers, representing an increase of CFA20 billion, compared to that of the last crop season.
With nearly 5,000 permanent and seasonal employees, SODECOTON, on which the economy of northern Cameroon is largely based, is one of the country’s biggest job providers.
