The inhabitants of Mundemba, Isangele and Akwa in the Ndian Division of the South West Region, say they are now very satisfied with the ongoing maintenance work on this stretch of road by the Ministry of Public Works.
Taking a flash black on this strange of road some months ago transportation of both goods and persons from one part of the division to another was practically impassable as only commercial bikes were at the mercy of the population. Talking to Eden, an inhabitant of the area whose name we got as Michael Nwango, said the Mundemba- Isangele and Bakassi road was in a very bad state that many people could only be seen using the canoe that cost FCFA 5000 moving from Isangele to Mundemba while those in Akwa FCFA 10,000 to Mundemba. But today inhabitants could be seen moving without any problems thanks to the Ministry of Public Works and its partners.
The South West Regional Delegate of Public Works, Willington Tanyi Tanyi, said this 66 kilometre stretch of road have not been easy to maintain given that their trucks have to move right up to Konye to carry volcanic ash which was the best material needed for the road. He also said looking at the clay nature of the road, it is easy to absorb water so this volcanic ash material that is not sensible to water is put on the road and when sun comes out it sticks instantly.
It should be noted that one of the major problems faced by engineers is that of distance to get raw materials as they have to cover some 200 kilometres to get the volcanic material needed for the road thereby making it very expensive for the government. But it is the only material that can be used to do effective work on the road.
Today the road is better-off and it remains passable even during the raining season.
An indigene of Mundemba, Pa Motiti Ferdinand, said they are very happy with the government for coming to solve their major worries in division as they can easily move from Mundemba, Akwa to Isangele within a day. It should also be noted that transport fares have also reduced for travellers due to the good state of the road.
