Nigeria imported $36.5 billion goods from the world in 2018 with the decrease of -18.3% compared to 2014, but an increase of 26.1% over 2017.
Given Nigeria's population of 203.5 million people, its total $36.5 billion in 2018 imports translates to roughly $180 in yearly product demand from every person in the West African region country.
Nigeria's Top 10 Imports
The following product groups represent the highest dollar value in Nigeria's import purchases during 2018. Also shown is the percentage share each product category represents in terms of overall imports into Nigeria.
1.Mineral fuels including oil: US$10.8 billion (29.7% of total imports)
2.Machinery including computers: $5.2 billion (14.2%)
3.Ships, boats: $3.4 billion (9.4%)
4.Vehicles: $2.2 billion (6.1%)
5.Electrical machinery, equipment: $2.1 billion (5.6%)
6.Plastics, plastic articles: $1.4 billion (3.8%)
7.Cereals: $1.2 billion (3.3%)
8.Fish: $686.5 million (1.9%)
9.Articles of iron or steel: $681.9 million (1.9%)
10.Iron, steel: $618.9 million (1.7%)
Nigeria's imported ships and boats posted the fastest-growing increase in value among the top 10 import categories, thanks to its 2,464% increase from 2017 to 2018.
In second place for higher purchases were vehicles (up by 51.7%). Nigeria's imports of iron and steel metal appreciated by 41.7% ahead of the 32.9% gain for purchases under the mineral fuels including oil category.
The two declining top import categories were cereals (down -15.7%) notably corn and wheat, then fish (down -0.8%).
Machinery
In 2018, Nigerian importers spent the most on the following 10 subcategories of machinery.
1.Taps, valves, similar appliances: US$351.1 million (down -20% from 2017)
2.Turbo-jets: $287.5 million (up 23.1%)
3.Dishwashing, clean/dry/fill machines: $242.8 million (up 65.5%)
4.Rubber/plastic article making machines: $229.9 million (up 100.2%)
5.Clean/sort/grading machines for seeds/grains/vegetables: $221.9 million (up 131%)
6.Liquid pumps and elevators: $189.3 million (up 18.9%)
7.Centrifuges, filters and purifiers: $183.7 million (up 15.8%)
8.Temperature-change machines: $183.6 million (down -15.7%)
9.Miscellaneous machinery: $180.1 million (up 40.7%)
10.Sewing machines, related furniture: $163.9 million (up 108.9%)
