Morocco’s Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, Leila Benali, announced on December 27 that the government has allocated an investment budget of up to MAD 21 billion ($2.26 billion) to the National Program of Household Waste (PNDM) by the end of 2021.
Benali made the statements in response during a weekly session at the House of Representatives, the lower chamber of the Moroccan parliament.
The ministry has contributed MAD 3 billion ($324.11 million) to the PNDM investment to boost the management and treatment of waste according to international standards, she said.
While the waste management sector in Morocco has undergone profound development, Benali noted, there is still much to do, especially when it comes to addressing illegal landfills.
Of her ministry’s efforts to further Morocco’s energy ambitions and establish the country as a leading global voice in waste energy transition, Benali said that the current projects revolve around the rehabilitation of the environment, the preservation of natural resources, and the fight against pollution.
The ministry has notably set aside MAD 47 million ($5 million) for the completion of feasibility studies for waste management projects, she noted.
Thise budget also funded the preparation of tender documents for landfill centers and professional waste recovery, as well as the closure of illegal dumps. This fund was part of support, accompaniment, and a technical assistance program for local authorities across Morocco.
Benali concluded that the PNDM is projected to enhance the rate of professional trash collection, equip all urban centers with controlled landfills, rehabilitate uncontrolled landfills, and professionalize the sector's management through delegated management.
