Morocco's cereal imports reached over 8.8 million tonnes last year, new data from the National Ports Agency (ANP) has said.
The number represents an increase of 23.2% year-on-year, with imports received at the Casablanca port amounting to 4.7 million tonnes
The cereals received by the Casablanca port represent around 53.6% of the overall grain traffic, followed by Jorf Lasar, Agadir, Nador, and Safi.
ANP attributed the increase in Morocco's cereal imports to “unfavorable climatic conditions.”
Morocco’s cereal production recorded low output in the previous agriculture season.
In the 2021-22 campaign, Morocco’s production of main cereals did not exceed 34 million quintals compared to over 100 million quintals in the previous season.
The North African country has been facing the severest drought in four decades due to lack of downpours and rising temperatures.
To tackle the situation, the country has intensified cereal imports to meet local demands.
Morocco is one of the largest cereal importers worldwide.
Data from Trading Economics suggests that Morocco's cereal imports reached a value of $2.28 billion in 2020.
Ukraine and Russia contributed to Morocco’s wheat supply by 20% and 7%, respectively.
With the Russia-Ukraine war impacting those countries’ supply chains and trade capabilities, Morocco has been also attempting to diversify partners to address its wheat supply.
The Moroccan Interprofessional Office for Cereals and Legumes introduced in March a new amendment, encouraging companies to import cereal products form the Black Sea region.
