Empowering Small Projects: Egypt witnesses growth in microenterprise funding

Egypt's microenterprise sector has witnessed a substantial increase in project funding, with total allocations reaching LE42.6 billion by the end of July in the current year. This marks a significant growth from the LE33.3 billion recorded in July 2022.

Project funding in the microenterprise sector has been disbursed across various industries. The commercial sector secured the highest share at 59.21 percent, followed by the agricultural sector at 20.25 percent, the services sector at 13.85 percent, and the productive sector at 6.69 percent.

Companies accounted for 62.64 percent of the total funding, while associations and civil society organizations of Class A received 33.94 percent of the total funding. Class B and Class C organizations secured 1.38 percent and 2.04 percent of the total funding, respectively.


The number of beneficiaries of microenterprise project funding increased to 3.83 million beneficiaries as of July 2023, compared to 3.81 million beneficiaries in July 2022.

The commercial sector boasted the largest number of beneficiaries by the end of July 2023, constituting 62.86 percent of the total. It was followed by the agricultural sector at 16.87 percent, the services sector at 13.81 percent, and the productive sector at 6.46 percent.


Class A civil society organizations had the highest percentage of beneficiaries at 47.64 percent, while they accounted for 46.76 percent in companies. Class B organizations represented 1.72 percent of the beneficiaries, and Class C organizations made up around 3.88 percent.

Among male beneficiaries, they received the highest percentage of microenterprise project funding, constituting 53.24 percent of the total funding by the end of July 2023. This indicates a slight increase from the 53.17 percent recorded in the same month in 2022.

The number of male beneficiaries witnessed an uptick in the percentage they held, reaching 41.54 percent by the end of July 2023, up from 39.52 percent in the same month in 2022.


As for female beneficiaries, they secured 46.76 percent of the total microenterprise project funding by the end of July 2023. This reflects a minor decrease from the 46.83 percent recorded in the same month in 2022.
The number of female beneficiaries declined to 58.46 percent by the end of July in the current year, compared to 60.48 percent in the same period in 2022.
